Methods of Consumption: Beyond the Smoke

Methods of Consumption: Beyond the Smoke

Consuming cannabis by burning dried flower is by far the most popular method of consumption. In this post, we go over the most common ways people use cannabis, the onset (time it takes to feel the effects), duration (how long the effects generally last), and advantages and disadvantages of each.

1. Inhalation: Smoking

Rolling dried flower in a joint or putting it into a pipe or bong are widely used ways to consume cannabis.

Onset: 5-15 minutes
Duration: 2 - 4 hours

Advantages: You have control over which kind of strain and the amount you consume
Disadvantages: Smoking may irritate your lungs or affect others via secondhand smoke

2. Inhalation: Vaping

Using a vaporizer is a smokeless way to heat the dried flower or cannabis oil and inhale for a quick onset.

Onset: 5-15 minutes
Duration: 2 - 4 hours

Advantages: Many vaporizers are discreet, portable, and work with the push of a button or a simple pull on the mouthpiece.
Disadvantages: There can be some risks of lung irritation, especially due to chemical solvents used in lower quality oils. Some may find the psychoactive effects are not as strong as other methods.

3. Ingestion: Edibles

The variety of quality edibles is ever growing! From gummies, chocolates, candies, to baked goods, and more.

Onset: 30 minutes - 3 hours
Duration: 4 - 6 hours

Advantages: Great variety, different flavors. Discreet and convenient. Long lasting effects.
Disadvantages: Can be mistaken for treats without cannabis. Since the effects take time to come on, some people may be quick to take more which can lead to unpleasant effects for some.

4. Ingestion: Beverages

Cannabis beverages are an up and coming type of product. With many great flavours and brands to choose from, this is a great way to consume cannabis for some people.

Onset: 30 minutes - 3 hours
Duration: 4 - 6 hours

Advantages: Great variety, different flavors. Discreet and convenient. Long lasting effects. HYDRATION!
Disadvantages: Can also be mistaken for non-cannabis beverages if labels aren’t observed. The effects will take time to come on so consuming too much too fast can lead to unpleasant experiences for some.

5. Sublingual: Tinctures

Sublingual means sprays or tinctures (liquid cannabis extracts) are placed under the tongue so they are taken directly into the bloodstream.

Onset: 15 minutes - 2 hours
Duration: 2-6 hours

Advantages: Discrete and odorless
Disadvantages: Cannabis extract is commonly dissolved in alcohol, which some users don’t want.
